Welcome to Gaelscoil de hÍde to your family. A few important points to be aware of:
School begins at 8:35am and finishes at 1.20pm for infants and 2.20 for all other classes – collections are from infant yard or Halla on very wet days
School finishes at 12 noon for Junior infants for the first two weeks of the year.
Full school uniform is to be worn everyday.
Healthy lunches at school please. NO NUTS, crisps, bars(including cereal bars), sweets, biscuits or fizzy drinks.
A folder (Filteán) goes home every Friday which is to be returned Monday morning. This contains our school newsletter and other important news items on activities, school closures and other events. Please read it.
Give your child a healthy lunch – foods he/she can manage.
Always keep the school updated with address and contact phone numbers.
At school: Accompany your child to the classroom door for as long as necessary. On the first day please be sensible – do not over stay. We do not encourage parents to stay in the classroom or to hang around. Cairde de hÍde will have cupán for the new parents in Tearmainn Mhuire beside the church. Children need to feel independent. Gradually encourage your child to be left at the Halla and to come in alone.
Collect children punctually at 1.20pm. They will line up in the infant yard – it may take a week or two for the teacher to recognise the new parents so please be patient with us! If you have a childminder or crèche collecting the children please ask them to respect our rules and pass on any relevant school information to them.
The first few weeks at school are for settling in. They will be getting used to sitting, lining up and general routine of the classroom. A lot of listening and oral work will be done. Pre- writing skills will be developed – colouring, patterns and holding pencil properly. Letter formation and sounds – in Naíonáin Bheaga we use lower case letters. Please practise the letters – sound, name and formation as the children learn them.
Check your child’s bag regularly for notes or other children’s belongings.
Party Invitations: if your child is having a party and you want to distribute the invitations in school our policy is that you invite all of the boys or all of the girls in the class – or the whole class if you’d like!
Accidents – in case of minor accidents the child will be taken care of in school. If the teacher is in any way concerned about an injury a parent will be contacted. If anyway prone to bathroom accidents please inform the class teacher at the beginning of the year and a small bag with spare clothes should be given to the teacher.
Always feel free to talk to the teacher – no matter how minor the problem. Talk to your child about their experiences of school and if you sense any problems come and talk to the teacher. Appointments are made through the office.
